Find VAT postings that have no tax (VAT Reconciliation)
List the journal entries posted to a VAT account without a tax chosen, so you know why the Tax Report and the VAT Return do not show them.
Before you start
The Tax Report and the VAT Return (VAT 201) count a journal entry only when a Tax is chosen on its line. Anything posted straight to a VAT account without a tax is left out of both. This report lists those entries.
Steps
- Open Accounting > Reports and choose VAT Reconciliation under Tax. The page title is VAT Entries Without Tax.
- Type the From and To dates of the VAT period you are checking and press Tab after each.
- Read the note at the top, then the list. Each line is a posted journal entry with its Date, Entry number, Kind (No tax chosen), the VAT Account, the Reference, the Label and the Amount.
- Click an entry number to open the journal entry. Its lines have a Tax column - empty on the line that should have carried the tax.
- Click VAT Reconciliation in the path at the top to come back. Entries counts the lines and Total (credit - debit) adds them up.
- Click Export and choose PDF, Excel or CSV to give the list to your accountant.
Note
Some entries belong here: VAT paid to the authority, settlements and opening balances. If an entry is VAT on a sale or a purchase, correct it so the VAT is counted: open it, and choose the tax on its income or expense line. A posted entry may first need to be reset to draft. Ask your accountant before changing old periods.
What happens next
When the list only holds entries that really are settlements, run the VAT Return (VAT 201).
