Prepare the UAE VAT Return (VAT 201)
Work out the boxes of the UAE FTA VAT 201 return for a period from your posted invoices, bills and cash purchases, check how each tax was classified, and export it.
Before you start
- Confirm every invoice, credit note, bill and cash purchase of the period. The return only counts posted documents.
- Your taxes must be set up with the right rate and name (for example UAE VAT 5%). See Taxes and VAT rates.
- Run the Tax Report first if you want to check the lines behind the boxes.
Steps
- Open Accounting > Reports and choose VAT Return (VAT 201) under Tax.
- Type the From and To dates of your return period (for example a quarter) and press Tab after each.
- Check Emirate. Standard-rated sales go into box 1a to 1g according to the emirate. It starts on Dubai: click the box to choose another one.
- Read the sales boxes. 1a to 1g are standard-rated supplies by emirate, 3 the reverse-charge supplies, 4 zero-rated supplies, 5 exempt supplies, 6 and 7 imports. Totals (supplies) in box 8 adds them up, with the VAT amount beside it.
- Read the purchase boxes. 9 is standard-rated expenses and 10 the reverse-charge expenses you can recover. 11 adds them up. Box 12 is the tax due for the period, box 13 the tax you can recover, and box 14 the difference. A negative figure in box 14 means the tax is repayable to you.
- Scroll to the bottom. How each tax was classified shows which box each of your taxes went into, by its rate and name. Check it before you file.
- Click Export and choose PDF or Excel to keep a copy of the return with your filing.
Important
This report prepares the figures. It does not file anything with the Federal Tax Authority. Enter the boxes in the FTA e-Services portal yourself, or give the export to your tax agent.
Note
A tax is placed by its rate and its name: 5% goes to standard rated, 0% to zero rated, and names such as Exempt, Reverse charge, Import or Out of scope to their own boxes. If a figure sits in the wrong box, correct the tax on the documents and run the report again. VAT posted to a VAT account without a tax is not in the return: see VAT Reconciliation.
What happens next
Keep the exported file with the Tax Report for the same dates.
